Amigos de las Tortugas Marinas (ATMAR) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of sea turtles in southeastern Puerto Rico. Founded on March 1, 2001, ATMAR began with a small group of volunteers and has since grown into a vital community initiative. The organization’s primary mission is to protect sea turtles, particularly the critically endangered leatherback and hawksbill species, by monitoring nesting sites and preventing poaching. ATMAR operates in the municipalities of Maunabo, Yabucoa, and Patillas, where volunteers patrol beaches to safeguard turtle nests and educate the public about marine conservation.

In addition to its fieldwork, ATMAR established a Tortuguero Center in April 2014, which serves as an educational hub featuring a museum, conference room, and accommodations for students and researchers. This center facilitates community outreach programs, school projects, and internships for university students interested in marine conservation. The organization’s commitment to education and research has been instrumental in fostering a deeper understanding of sea turtle ecology and the challenges they face.

ATMAR’s dedication has led to significant achievements, including the reduction of egg poaching and the illegal hunting of nesting females. The organization continues to face challenges such as light pollution, coastal erosion, and incidental fishing, which threaten sea turtle populations. Through ongoing conservation efforts, public education, and community engagement, ATMAR strives to ensure the survival of sea turtles in Puerto Rico.
